Travelling into and through the Grampians tourism region has been affected by several road closures, following the recent storms.

Work continues on The Grampians National Park

Chris Burchett of Grampians Tourism says repairs are being done quickly.

“Yes, the park is closed for the moment but I’m just amazed to see the speed with which the recovery effort is being put in place,” he said.

“Parks Victoria have been doing assessments, along with VicRoads, of just what can be opened safely in the park and they’ve already identified probably six or seven areas.”

“We are working through developing a list of the experiences and attractions that are available in the region. It obviously includes the man made attractions (horse riding, quad bike adventures, golf, zoo adventure golf, the galleries, the museums, the lakes and waterways for fishing, kayaking and boating, but also talks of the landscapes that remain, the kangaroos).”

Halls Gap is open for business!

The Grampians National Park has suffered extensive damage. Heavy rain and strong winds caused flooding and landslides, with rocks and trees blocking roads in many cases.

Parks Victoria is working with VicRoads and others to provide access to the park as soon as possible, but the damage is extensive, the recovery will take time, and visitor safety is the first priority.

For walkers, this means many popular walking tracks are closed, often with most infrastructure such as bridges, camping facilities and picnic tables lost.

However, there are positive ecological impacts to recognise, with freshwater lakes replenished and many species of flora and fauna flourishing in these conditions.

The key to gaining the most updated information for your holiday to the Grampians is to visit Brambuk the National Park and Cultural Centre. Here you can discover more about the parks fascinating natural and cultural landscape.

Chat to information staff about the many recreational opportunities available, visit the spectacular Gariwerd dreaming theatre, explore interpretive displays or relax in the bush tucker café. Cultural Rangers will be able to take you on a bush tucker walk or rock art tour, or you can try your hand at traditional Aboriginal painting methods.

Located just south of the Halls Gap township, the centre is open daily from 9am – 5pm except on Christmas day. Phone 5361 4000.

Why not book an appointment with Bec at Grampians Healing Hands where you can get a gentle flowing massage that relaxes the body and mind, increases circulation, soothes sore muscles and leaves you feeling balanced.

Bec offers a wide variety of other treatment and can be contacted on 0429 174 178.

The Grampians National Park is currently closed and Parks Victoria has begun assessing damage following significant storm and flood damage following heavy rain and strong winds. Considerable damage has been caused by flooding, landslides, and fallen rocks and trees.

Parks Victoria is working with other agencies and authorities such as VicRoads, to provide access to the park as soon as possible, but visitors should be aware of the magnitude of the task.

Visitor safety must be the highest priority and it will be some time before Parks Victoria is able to assure the public that areas have been made safe and can be opened.

However,  they are working very hard to get several tracks and visitor destinations open quickly, particularly with Australia Day next week. Some walks close to Halls Gap, destinations north of Roses Gap and walks in the southern area of the Grampians will be a priority.

Damage to roads, tracks and park infrastructure has been extensive. Access roads and the wider gravel road network are severely damaged. These roads can be expected to remain closed for some time.

VicRoads manages a number of access roads in the park and is assessing the damage. Specific roads damage includes the Dunkeld to Halls Gap Road (including two bridges at Fyans Creek), the Mount Victory Road (closed by a collapse at Epacris Falls and substantial landslides), and Silverband Falls Road, which has been closed by landslides and collapses at many points.

As the park is closed, the walking tracks are also closed. Specifically, the walking track network within the Wonderland Range, including the Pinnacle and Silverband Walking tracks,  also the Balconies, MacKenzie Falls are also closed. There is extensive damage to the walking track from Halls Gap to the Wonderland Car Park which includes the Venus Baths walk.

Infrastructure damage will  be assessed after mud, logs and rocks are cleared.

Other damage includes: In the Mt William area, two large walking bridges on Sheep Hills Track have been completely destroyed and washed downstream; walking bridges at Mackenzie Falls and Zumstein; the Zumstein picnic ground and Jimmy Creek campground. It is likely that there is major infrastructure loss between Rosea car park to Silverband Falls Car Park.

The Brambuk National Park and Cultural Centre and Halls Gap are open for business. The lakes surrounding the Grampians are looking spectacular and there is still plenty to do in the Grampians Region. Please visit the local visitor centre where staff can provide you with information on the many activities and attractions.

In Halls Gap the water has receded, and the majority of people have been able to return while there hasn’t been too much damage to residential property, there will be a major cleanup effort needed.

There was a community meeting tonight at 5pm Monday the 17th of January in the Halls Gap hall.  We will update this blog with information as it is made available.

Town water has been restored. Drinking water supplies continue to be available from the drinking water trailer located outside the Tourist Information Centre. Residents should not drink the tap water until further notice.

The National park remains closed but Parks Victoria rangers are working to assess damage and reopen areas as soon as they are safe.

The weather forecast for the upcoming week is for mainly fine and sunny conditions with temperatures in the low 20′s rising to 30 degrees by Sunday.

The cleanup in Halls Gap has well and truly begun.  Whilst the full extent of the damage to the National Park caused by the recent heavy rains is not yet know, water supply has been restored to the majority of the Halls Gap township and many businesses have re opened their doors for trading.

Whilst visitors may not be able to access the National Park over the next few days, there are still other things available to keep people busy:

Firstly, The Halls Gap Zoo remains open.  The Zoo comprises 120 species of native & exotic mammals, reptiles and birds.  You can observe the inquisitive meerkats, playful monkey’s, pure bred dingoes, grand barbary sheep and a plethora of wallaby and kangaroo species.  The zoo is actively involved in breeding & conservation programs for Brush-tailed Bettong, Tasmanian devil, Bilby, Bush Stone-Curlew, Quoll & Rock-wallabies.

The Halls Gap Swimming Pool is open.  Why not spent the afternoon relaxing in the sun.  Adjacent to the pool is the playground.  Full of fun activities for the kids.

Take a drive into nearby Stawell.  Stawell is the service centre for the Grampians and has the largest operating gold mine in Victoria and is home to the famous ‘Stawell Gift’ held every Easter.  There are museums, galleries, a miniature world and a leisure centre in the town.

If you are after food, the Halls Gap Hotel is serving meals and the General Store is open for business.
